The Water-Cress -MoMordica Herbal Tea is so versatile -it detoxes, heals common ailments like coughs, and has anti-cancer benefits as well
There is a combined herbal tea I take when the heat’s getting to me. It boasts 3 great ingredients that have a long history and are all-time favorites! It’s like having 3 great women from the National Women’s Hall of Fame come together all at the same time – you can’t tell who's the most talented!

Most of the time, I use this tea to detoxify my body - to keep spots from breaking out on my face, improve urine flow, and get rid of a cough. I would drink the tea, and then wait for that new surge of energy coming over me.

Yes, it’s the water-cress-momordica fruit- Chinese red date tea. When I drink this tea, I’m queen of myself though China falls! For me, its detox ability was enough for me, I didn’t see the anti-cancer benefit then.

Now this particular brew is a common ritual among my family and kinsfolks, and cancer, the big 'C', was unheard of. Not till the day my cousins decided to relieve their mother of all cooking chores.

Now these modern day cousins are all professional ladies, with little time nor patience to boil herbal teas as did their mother, my aunt.

Oh boy, one of them developed a nose cancer! She was O.K. after treatment, but, this rude shock led to a flurry of changes -and it's back to guzzling good old herbal teas!

Herbalist Seng-huat Gan explains the herb combination like this:

the Chinese red date or jujube is added to enhance the effects of water-cress, while momordica fruit or luo han guo is a natural sweetener, a sort of sugar substitute.

The main herb’s water-cress, the support herb’s, red date, and luo han's thrown in to sweeten the deal.

The combined herbal tea history is simply fantastic!

The jujube has been widely cultivated in China for 4000 years, and the momordica fruit, in Guangxi Province dated back to 1813, while watercress was commercially produced in the 1800's.

You can’t really tell what's the synergy really like when 3 greats and history roll into one, can you?

A study funded by the Watercress Alliance, and published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that eating watercress regularly will reduce cell damage and help cut cancer risk.

Also, watercress offers 2-fold benefits -increases beneficial compounds levels, and decreases harmful compounds levels in the blood.

So my simple solution of using watercress to detox has 2 purposes: a clean-up of toxins and a back-fill with good substances.

This way you avoid a double health whammy , toxins, that lead to cancer.

The luo han fruit balances heat build-up that stresses your digestive and eliminative systems out. This means dark yellow urine becomes a pale yellow, and luo han is a simple way to avoid constipation.

The caramel sweetness of mogroside makes luo han fruit the only sweetener available that's great for weight loss - it’s clinically proven to speed up your fat burning process without stimulating insulin production.

What a swell guy is luo han! Oh ladies, you’re going to love him!

But wait till you see this little red fella. The Chinese red date
contains Betulinic Acid which has been found to kill human melanoma cells, but not the healthy cells. (Sources:Pisha et al, 1995; Kim et al, 1998)

It has also been found to prevent the spread of HIV 1 infection.

In addition, betulinic acid has been found to have anti-inflammatory effects (Source: Kim et al, 1998), and anti-bacterial properties and it inhibits bacteria growth (Source: Eiznhamer and Xu, 2004).

A study suggests that oleamide, the active ingredient of jujuba, could prevent Alzheimer’s disease.(Source:Heo et al,2003)

The stimulatory effects of Z. jujuba on nitric oxide released in the kidney may reduce blood pressure, inflammation of the kidney action, possibly by increasing renal blood flow (Source:Kim and Han, 1996).

The Chinese Materia Medica: Chemistry, Pharmacology and Applications describes Z. spinosa, the wild spiny Z. jujuba, as having sedative and hypnotic effects in many animal species including humans.

In traditional uses it helps to nourish the heart, calm the nerves and is useful for insomnia and dream disturbed sleep (Source:Zhu,1998). What is there, the red date can’t do?

If you can grow your own water-cress in a large planting bowl, and you might as well grow your own jujube!

But the luo han fruit is rather difficult to grow It requires an environment of high humidity, limited sunlight, temperate winters and high altitude, or it wouldn’t develop properly.

Well, here’s the ‘Water-Cress Herbal Tea Recipe’ from “Ultimate Herbal Tea And Drink Recipes’ for you:
